10 things I wish I had known earlier about ADHD
May 20, 202310 things I wish I would have learned earlier about ADHD.
That I am not stupid- just misunderstood.
I'm sure people thought I was flaky and stupid when I was younger. Especially my teachers. They probably thought I didn't try very well and that I gave up. Probably did eventually, but, you know, it wasn't my fault.
That some of my weaknesses are actually my strengths.
We tend to hyper focus. And sometimes , it's bad because we have a crash after and have anxiety or whatever, but we're really good with deadlines.
That I even had it.
I wish I knew more about it earlier in life. Which leads me to why it is so hard to diagnose in girls.
That it is so hard to diagnose in girls.
I think if I was a little boy that was hyperactive, bouncing off the walls, I would have been diagnosed earlier. Girls have more inattentive tendencies and we internalize it and we mask it so other people don't know we're different.
I wish I had a community earlier in life.
I wish I had a community of women earlier in life that I could talk to and that I knew also had it.
I wish I had learned to laugh at myself earlier.
I didn't take a joke very well when I was younger, but as I got older, that got better. I remember I would even say I pulled a "Jen" if I knew that I did something that people would laugh at.
I wish I had explained the symptoms earlier to my husband. Lol.
I used to leave things out on the counter. I drove him crazy, but when he'd put it up, I'd explain to him that it was there because I will forget about it if it's not there in front of me. Now we have phones with Google Docs and lists that we can carry around in our hands... when we were first married, it wasn't, it wasn't so common.
That I could be a leader in bringing awareness to other women much earlier on.
Even if you're not ADD, being a busy mom of multiple children, probably feels a lot like it. Just imagine like your busiest days. That's what it feels like every day for an ADHD person. We have a million voices going on at the same time in our mind.
All the creative advantages we have over others.
I wish that I would have understood some of the advantages of being ADD. We are more creative. We we, I haven't met an ADD person that doesn't have a magnetic personality.
And lastly, I just want you to know.....whether you are diagnosed, or not, don't wait to chase your dreams in life.
ADHD is so much more manageable when you are doing something you love.
